Turiisk, a town with chronicle history

Turiisk is first mentioned in the Primary Chronicle under 1097, and the 925th anniversary of that record was marked nationally in 2022. A castle, first wooden and later stone, stood above the Turiia River; King Sigismund I granted Turiisk to Prince Roman Sanguszko, who rebuilt it, and the town was then one of Volyn's largest centres of crafts and trade. In 1652 the nobility of the Volhynian Voivodeship held a sejmik here. In 1759 King Augustus III granted Magdeburg rights at the request of voivode J?zef Kanty Ossoli?ski, and in 2001 Turiisk was listed among Ukraine's historic settlements.

People connected with Turiisk

In 1808, while serving in the Mariupol Hussar Regiment, Nadezhda Durova (1783–1866), the first woman army officer, lived in Turiisk. Rabbi Avraham (1806–1889), known as the Maggid of Trisk and founder of the Trisk Hasidic dynasty, preached here. Artist Volodymyr Marchuk and puppet theatre actress Larysa Mikoian (Voronova) are also linked to the town.

Turiisk today
