What to know about Tiachiv

Tiachiv dates back to 1329, when Hungarian King Charles Robert made it a free royal town together with Khust, Vyshkovo, Dovhe Pole and Sighet; charters of 1406 and 1453 confirmed these rights. Its main church, today the Reformed church, appears in records from 1332. In 1576 Transylvanian prince Stephen B?thory, then staying in Tiachiv, was nominated King of Poland. The railway arrived in 1876, town status was restored in 1961, and in 2001 Tiachiv was added to the list of historic towns of Ukraine.

Names linked to Tiachiv

Hungarian painter Simon Holl?sy (1857–1918), head of a Munich school of painting, spent his last years here and is honoured with two memorial plaques. Writer and teacher Oleksandr Markush (1891–1971) worked in Tiachiv from 1910 to 1939. The town is the birthplace of Archbishop Viktor (Bed, b. 1964), a member of Ukraine's first parliament, and of Sergeant Roman Kozychka (1984–2015), who fell in the battle for Debaltseve and was posthumously made an honorary citizen.

Tiachiv today

The town lies on the Tisza near the Romanian border and is the centre of Maramorosh. Sights include the Reformed church, the Roman Catholic church (1780), the Greek Catholic Church of the Dormition (1852), the Shevchenko monument and the Lajos Kossuth monument with a plaque marking the 1913 flood level. Between the wars Tiachiv was known for orchards yielding about 1,000 wagons of apples a year. We deliver bouquets to any address in Tiachiv.
