Vashkivtsi: a little history

The first written record of Vashkivtsi dates from 1431, when Nemyrko Chortoryiskyi sold the village to Ivan Kupchych of Suceava. From 1433 to 1774 it belonged to the Moldavian state and then came under Austrian rule. Pylyp Orlyk stayed here in 1710, the town received Magdeburg rights in 1767, and in 1848 local peasants joined the movement led by Lukian Kobylytsia. Vashkivtsi became a town and district centre in 1903, the same year one of the first Sich societies in Bukovyna was founded here. Its oldest coat of arms (1811–1812) shows a wolf running beneath a tree.

Both authors of the song Cheremshyna were born here: the lyricist Mykola Yuriichuk (1937–1997) and the composer and conductor Vasyl Mykhailiuk (1929–2003). Vashkivtsi is also the birthplace of the ornament artist Heorhii Haras (1901–1972), the painter Yevhen Maksymovych (1857–1928), chief artist of the Bukovyna Metropolis, and the Canadian lawyer and senator John Hnatyshyn (1907–1967), father of Governor General Ramon Hnatyshyn.

The town lies on the right bank of the Cheremosh and its tributary, the Hlybochok. Landmarks include St. Nicholas Church (1854), the Church of the Assumption consecrated in 1826, St. Anne's Hill with its convent, Vashkivtsi Park with the Kryshtofovych manor, and the Heorhii Haras Museum. A sculpture honours the Pereberiia masquerade held on the night of 13–14 January. We will deliver a bouquet to any address in Vashkivtsi, whether home, office or a festive table.
