Voronizh: from its origins to today

Modern Voronizh grew from a farmstead on the Osota River in the early 17th century, though finds nearby include late Palaeolithic flint tools, Bronze Age and Scythian settlements and an Old Rus burial ground. From 1654 it was a company town of the Nizhyn Regiment; destroyed by the army of John II Casimir in 1664, it was rebuilt under captain Sava Prokopovych and ringed with a rampart, parts of which survive. In the 18th century it was a craft and trading centre, and in the 1850s two sugar mills and the Tereshchenko brothers' brickworks opened here.

Notable people of Voronizh

Voronizh is the birthplace of writer, folklorist and translator Panteleimon Kulish, baptised here in 1819; a memorial sign to him stands by School No. 1, which bears his name. Poet and playwright Prokip Kotliarov, folklorist Ivan Abramov, opera tenor Mykola Ivanov and painter Mytrofan Zinoviev were also born here.

Voronizh today

The settlement spreads along both banks of the Osota. Its gem is the baroque St Michael's Church of the early 18th century, associated with architect Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi, alongside the Transfiguration Church (late 18th century) and the Church of the Holy Protection (1854).
