What to know about Vradiivka

The history of Vradiivka goes back to the second half of the 18th century: in 1772 the settlement had 55 households. It is named after a retired sergeant-major, Vradii, who helped 60 families settle at the source of the Bakshala River, and until 1964 it was called Velyka Vradiivka. In the late 19th century the Balta–Yelysavethrad railway was built nearby, giving rise to Vradiivka station. In summer 1919 the short-lived Vradiivka Farmers' Republic was proclaimed here, and from 1923 the settlement was a district centre. Vradiivka honours its native Yurii Koveniev (1990–2023), a senior soldier of the Azov Brigade of the National Guard who served in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

People of Vradiivka

The artist Oleh Tistol (born 1960), a leader of the Ukrainian New Wave, was born in Vradiivka. Other natives include the actor, singer and director Mytrofan Yaroshenko (1858–1926), a pupil of Mykhailo Starytskyi, and the poet and screenwriter Anatolii Lohvynenko-Slavuta (1937–2012).

Vradiivka today

The settlement lies on the watershed of the Kodyma and Bakshala rivers, on the Podilsk–Holta–Pomichna railway, with the E584 highway passing its southern edge. It has the Vradiivka Historical Museum, a central park with an Alley of Glory, and St Nicholas Church consecrated in 2017. Local businesses include a grain elevator, the Vradiivskyi agricultural plant and a Nibulon branch. A courier will bring flowers to any part of Vradiivka.
