A short history of Vynnyky

Vynnyky has been known since 22 August 1352, when it was first recorded under King Casimir III and owned by Yuriy Stecher, grandson of Lviv's first vogt. The Zamoyski family held it from 1631 to 1696, and on 17 May 1666 King John Casimir confirmed its conversion into a town under Magdeburg law. On 18 September 1785 serfdom was abolished here, the first place in Galicia where this happened.

Famous people of Vynnyky

Metropolitan and linguist Ivan Ohiienko lived here with his family in 1922–1924, as a memorial sign on Halytska Street recalls. Footballer Rostyslav Potochniak (b. 1948), a 1969 USSR Cup winner, was born in Vynnyky, and opera singer Oleksandra Lyubych-Parakhoniak (1892–1977) is buried here.

Vynnyky today

The town lies 6 km east of Lviv on the Marunka River, next to Vynnyky Lake, the forest park, the 414 m Devil's Rocks and the Vynnyky arboretum founded in 1898. Sights include the Church of the Resurrection (1842), the Church of the Assumption (1738–1766), the former Lutheran church of 1936 and the Imperial Well (1826).
