What to know about Winnipeg
Winnipeg's story begins in 1738, when French trader La V?rendrye built Fort Rouge, a fur-trading post at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. Lord Selkirk's Red River Colony followed in 1812, and the North West Company's Fort Gibraltar was renamed Fort Garry in 1822. Winnipeg was incorporated as a city on 8 November 1873; its name, after nearby Lake Winnipeg, comes from the Cree for "muddy water". After the railway arrived in 1881 the city grew fast, becoming Canada's third-largest by 1911, and in 1967 it was the first Canadian host of the Pan American Games.
Winnipeg's Ukrainian story
For almost a century and a half Winnipeg has been home to a large Ukrainian community. The city hosts the headquarters of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the cathedrals and residences of the metropolitans of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada and the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada. Stephen Juba (1914–1993), mayor from 1957 to 1977, was the first Ukrainian Canadian to hold high political office in the city, and the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden in Assiniboine Park honours sculptor Leo Mol (1915–2009). Lviv is one of Winnipeg's sister cities.
Places every local knows
The heart of the city is The Forks, drawing about four million visitors a year. Nearby stand the Manitoba Legislative Building (1920) with its Golden Boy statue, the Exchange District, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the Manitoba Museum with its replica of the ship Nonsuch. Locals are proud of Folklorama, the world's largest and longest-running cultural festival, and of the bear named Winnipeg that inspired part of Winnie-the-Pooh's name. We will hand your flowers to the recipient at any address in Winnipeg.
