Yavoriv, a town with a royal past

Yavoriv first appears in court and land records on 24 June 1376. King Sigismund II Augustus granted it Magdeburg rights on 2 July 1569. It later became the favourite residence of King John III Sobieski, with a wooden castle and a mint, and in 1675 the Treaty of Jawor?w between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and France was signed here.

Famous people of Yavoriv

Churchman and metropolitan Stefan Yavorskyi (1658–1722) and writer and poet Osyp Makovei (1867–1925) were born here. Priest and ethnographer Yosyp Lozynskyi, who founded the first Ukrainian reading room in 1881, served in the town.
