Zalishchyky, a royal-charter town on the Dniester

According to historian O. Tur, the earliest written records of Zalishchyky date to 1340. In 1594 Field Crown Hetman Stanis?aw ???kiewski gathered troops here against the Tatars. The present town was founded around 1750, and in 1766 King Stanis?aw August Poniatowski granted it Magdeburg rights. In early June 1919 Zalishchyky was briefly the capital of the West Ukrainian People's Republic. Until 1939 it was a wine-making centre with a grape harvest festival and a climatic resort with Dniester beaches.

Notable people of Zalishchyky

Writer Osyp Makovei (1867—1925) headed the local teachers' seminary, devoted the story "Galician Meran" to the town and is buried here. Co-operative movement organiser Yevhen Khraplyvyi (1898—1949) gave his name to the agricultural college, and Oleh Olzhych studied Trypillia sites here in 1928—1929.

Zalishchyky today

The town sits on the left bank of the Dniester on the E85 road. The Lower Park by the river has over 400 rare trees of about 40 species. Landmarks include St Stanislaus Church (1763), the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God (1873), the Poniatowski Palace, the Brunicki Palace and the People's House (1908).
