Zatoka: from a lighthouse to a seaside resort

The settlement at the Tsarehrad mouth of the Dniester Estuary grew up in 1827 around a navigation mark. On 21 September 1851 the Dniester-Tsarehrad mark became a lighthouse, and in 1877 the wooden structure was replaced with a 16-metre tower fitted with a Fresnel lens. From 1918 to 1940 the southern part of today's Zatoka, then called Buhaz, belonged to Romania; it was renamed Zatoka on 14 November 1945. A lifting road-and-rail bridge across the mouth opened on 5 December 1955.

Zatoka's landmarks

Zatoka stretches along the narrow Budaky and Karolino-Buhaz spits between the Black Sea and the Dniester and Budaky estuaries. Its 50-metre-wide, 5-kilometre sandy beach made it one of Ukraine's most popular resorts before the full-scale war, and the Jazz Koktebel festival was held here from 2014. Landmarks include the Dniester-Tsarehrad Lighthouse, the lifting bridge, the Akkembetsky burial mound and the 1937 Zatoka sanatorium buildings.
