Zhashkiv: a bit of history

Zhashkiv has been known since 1636, when on 16 October a hillfort was recorded at the confluence of the Kozyna Rudka and the Rava Zhashkivska; the name also appears on Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan's map. At the time it belonged to the Tetiiv estates of the Ostrozky princes; from 1796 it was owned by Hryhorii Zakrevskyi and later by Jan Tarnowiecki. In 1840 Zhashkiv became a market town, and in 1860 a sugar mill with 350 workers opened. It became a district centre in April 1923 and received town status in 1956.

Notable natives of Zhashkiv

Writer Dokiia Humenna, American orientalist Samuel Kramer and American infectious disease specialist Maxwell Finland, who researched antibiotic treatment of tuberculosis, were born in Zhashkiv. Astronomer Vira Tarashchuk (1936–1980) and chess player Lev Omelchenko are also natives. The town honours Hero of Ukraine Junior Lieutenant Oleh Zaitsev (1974–2022) of the Defence Intelligence, who was born here.

Zhashkiv lies on the Torch and Lytvynka rivers, 65 km north of Uman, with the M05 highway along its western edge. Landmarks include the Taras Shevchenko bust, the Memorial of Glory and the local history museum; the House of the Accordion, founded by musician Ivan Sukhyi, has operated since 2006, and the Zhashkiv entomological reserve lies nearby.
