Zhovti Vody: a town with a Cossack name
The town is named after the Zhovta River: it washed over iron ore outcrops that stained the water yellow, so the Zaporozhian Cossacks called the valley the Zhovti Vody (Yellow Waters) tract. The battle in which Bohdan Khmelnytskyi's army defeated Stefan Potocki's troops on 16 May 1648, starting the Khmelnytskyi Uprising, is believed to have taken place nearby. The modern town dates from 1895, when an iron ore mine and the settlement of Zhovta Rika appeared. In 1951 the Eastern Mining and Processing Plant was set up here to mine uranium, and on 22 May 1957 the settlement became the town of Zhovti Vody.
