Zolochiv: from its first record to today

Zolochiv first appears in archival documents in 1423, and in 1523 it received Magdeburg rights with the support of its owner Stanis?aw Sieni?ski. In 1553 King Sigismund II Augustus granted the town an annual fair on Epiphany. Jakub Sobieski completed the rebuilding of Zolochiv Castle in 1634, and his son Jan, later King of Poland, often stayed here on campaigns. In 1672 the castle fell to the Turks after a six-day siege. The railway reached the town in 1871.

Famous people of Zolochiv

Naftali Herz Imber (1856–1909), author of the lyrics of Hatikvah, the national anthem of Israel, was born here, as was Roald Hoffmann (b. 1937), the American chemist who won the 1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Other natives include Zaporozhian hetman Samuel Zborowski (1540–1584), painter Marian Ivantsiv (1906–1971) and Iryna Shvaidak (b. 1989), singer-songwriter of the band Odyn v kanoe.

The town lies in the Zolochivka River valley on the Ternopil–Rava-Ruska road, 64 km from Lviv. Its highlight is the early 17th-century Zolochiv Castle with the Chinese Palace, a museum of Oriental cultures run by the Lviv Art Gallery. Also worth seeing are the 16th-century fortified St Nicholas Church, the Church of the Resurrection, the Ascension Church (1731–1763) and the monument to Markiyan Shashkevych.
