Zvenyhorodka: from the first record to today

Zvenyhorod on the Hnylyi Tikych River first appears in documents in 1394, when Kalenyk Myshkovych governed it for Prince Svidrigailo. In 1498 King Alexander Jagiellon appointed Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi starosta of Zvenyhorod. After the Tatars destroyed the old town in 1541, the castle was rebuilt on a new site, where the modern town stands. In 1792 King Stanis?aw August Poniatowski granted Zvenyhorodka a coat of arms and Magdeburg rights, and from 1798 it was a county town of Kyiv Governorate.

Notable people of Zvenyhorodka

Orientalist and academician Ahatanhel Krymskyi spent his childhood here, studying at the local school in 1876–1881; his father Yukhym Krymskyi opened the town's first library in 1881. Natives include violinist and Kyiv Conservatory professor Yakiv Mahaziner (1883–1941), actress Neonila Hnepovska (1925–2013), singer and People's Artist of Ukraine Tetiana Kumanovska (b. 1958) and Israeli writer Natan Agmon (1896–1980).

Zvenyhorodka today

The town lies on the Hnylyi Tikych, 114 km from Cherkasy, and Taras Shevchenko visited it many times. Landmarks include the Ahatanhel Krymskyi Memorial House Museum, rebuilt in 1996–1999 on the family estate site, the local history museum, the Roman Catholic Church of the Transfiguration, the Shevchenko monument and the UNR Army memorial sign (2011).
